Food items can also be dangerous products

Consumers in Tennessee should be able to expect that the food they purchase from the grocery store is safe for them and their families. Unfortunately, as recent recalls have demonstrated, food items can be dangerous products. Fresh cut fruit that was distributed to a number of states recently sickened nearly 100 people. While there have been no reports of illness in Tennessee, the salmonella-tainted fruit was also distributed to the state.

Both the Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration are investigating Caito Foods’ voluntary recall. The recall affects cut and packaged melons that were stock at stores like Target, Kroger, Walmart and more. According to the company, the recalled products were tainted with salmonella. Although no deaths related to salmonella exposure have been reported, 23 of the 93 infected people have been hospitalized.

Caito Foods is apparently working alongside the FDA to determine the origin of the Salmonella Carrau. This is a relatively rare strain that is usually only found in melons that have been imported to the country. This is the second time in less than a year that Caito Foods has had to try and trace a salmonella strain, as in June 2018 it issued a recall because of another contamination issue with imported melons.

Stores are usually quick to pull items off their shelves when companies issue recalls for dangerous products. Unfortunately, this may not matter much to Tennessee customers who have already purchased and consumed food that has been tainted with salmonella. When a defective or dangerous product causes serious harm to a consumer, it is possible to hold manufacturers and companies financially responsible through the careful actions of a products liability suit.
