Supplements are the way most Americans can satisfy the lack of nutritional value in the typical diet. A recent addition to the dangerous products list that is issued by the FDA is Kratom, which can seriously harm or kill those who consume it. Kratom, which is considered a psychoactive drug, is taken from a plant that is associated with the coffee family and has been linked to a recent outbreak of salmonella poisoning across the country. The supplement is said to heighten strength and create feelings of a high that can often help those who live in constant pain. The FDA sprang into action upon a number of reports linking the Kratom and a salmonella. Currently, 87 people have become sick with the bacterial infection after ingesting the supplement. The company, which is based in another state, was approached by the FDA and asked to issue a voluntary recall but refused. The FDA then ordered the company to stop distributing the product with no response. With the lack of compliance, the FDA decided to issue a mandatory recall.
Even with Kratom being banned in some states like Tennessee as it makes the list of dangerous products, residents still have access to purchase the product online or just over the state border. And currently, Kratom is just one of many herbal supplements that are not regulated by the FDA and carry side effects that can make a consumer fall ill.
