Rural roads often feel safe, tranquil and even relaxing for many drivers. They are relatively simple and straight, and they may have rather low traffic levels. Drivers do not assume that this is where they would be involved in a serious accident.
However, reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that rural road fatal accident rates are actually 3 to 10 times higher than fatal accident rates on city streets. An urban road may be much more complex and have far heavier traffic loads, but drivers are statistically much less likely to be involved in a serious crash.
Factors that influence the accident rate
There are a variety of reasons why this is true, starting with the fact that rural roads also have higher speed limits. These make accidents more dangerous, and serious or fatal injuries are more likely, even if there are fewer overall crashes.
Additionally, many rural car accidents happen at a significant distance from nearby medical services. When it takes a long time for emergency response crews to get to the crash scene or to transport injured parties to a hospital, it is more likely that people will pass away from their injuries. Someone who suffered the exact same injuries in the city, where they were just a few minutes from the hospital, may survive.
Seeking financial compensation
Have you lost a loved one in a car accident caused by another driver, or have you suffered serious injuries yourself? You may be facing significant financial costs, such as medical bills, funeral costs, lost wages and more. It is important to understand what options you have to seek financial compensation.
