3 reasons people tailgate

On Behalf of | Oct 13, 2025 | Car Accidents

Tailgating is dangerous and typically prohibited. Drivers are always required to maintain a safe following distance. Failing to do so can result in a rear-end accident, and a driver who is tailgating would then be responsible.

However, you have probably experienced people tailgating you before while you drive, so it is clear that this is an issue that still occurs. Let’s look at a few reasons why people do it, even though it is dangerous and illegal.

They are in a rush

The main reason is perhaps just that people are often in a hurry. If the car ahead of them is not going as fast as they would like, they may tailgate that driver as a way to pressure or bully them into driving faster.

It is a type of road rage

In other cases, tailgating can be a component of road rage. A driver may be very angry at the driver ahead of them, perhaps frustrated with how that person is driving. The tailgating is being done aggressively as an expression of their displeasure.

They are oblivious

Finally, some drivers simply do not understand what a safe distance looks like. Many young drivers struggle with this as they learn how to drive safely. Even some experienced drivers may have been tailgating for years, so it is just how they normally drive. They are oblivious to the danger and think that it is normal and safe, when it is actually the opposite.

Seeking compensation

Have you been injured in an accident caused by a driver who was tailgating? If so, be sure you know what legal options you have to seek financial compensation for medical bills and other costs.
