Deli meats and cheeses may be dangerous products

Standing in line at the deli counter to order lunch meats is something shoppers do many times a day in Tennessee and all over the country. Unfortunately, the products that they rely on to provide lunches for family members may cause their family members to become ill. A recent listeria outbreak has been linked to deli meats and cheeses that have caused them to be considered potentially dangerous products.

There have been eight reported cases of listeria symptoms and all have resulted in the victims being hospitalized. One of the victims died. An investigation has led officials to believe that the source of the outbreak stems from deli meat and cheeses, but they have not yet singled out a single supplier. Listeria has been identified in samples taken from multiple delis in multiple locations.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are not recommending that deli products be avoided, but they are urging caution for people who are at risk from complications from the symptoms of listeria. Those most at risk include pregnant women and newborns, the elderly and anyone with a weakened immune system. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever and diarrhea. More serious symptoms can occur if the bacteria spreads to other parts of a person’s body and can include headache, stiffness, vertigo and convulsions.

If a person experiences symptoms and requires hospitalization in Tennessee he or she may wish to consult with a personal injury attorney. A knowledgeable lawyer can review the facts of the situation and help the client to determine if the suspected dangerous products may have caused the issue. In that instance, a civil lawsuit may be an option and a successful claim can provide compensation for medical costs and other verifiable losses.
