Distracted walking is dangerous

Virtually every week, you likely see an article about a distracted driver causing an automobile collision. While you should always pay attention while behind the wheel, distracted walking can also be dangerous. That is, if you fail to watch your surroundings, you may increase your chances of sustaining a serious injury in a pedestrian-vehicle crash.

In 2018, there were more than 1,650 accidents involving pedestrians and motor vehicles in the Volunteer State. Of those, 10 were in Lawrence County. Because motor vehicles are often both heavier and faster than walkers, serious injuries and pedestrian deaths are not uncommon. Keeping your eye on the sidewalk, road signals and traffic is usually an effective way to avoid an accident. Here are some other suggestions:

1. Think about your outfit

When it comes to staying safe on foot, what you wear matters. If you walk after dark, wear bright clothing. Even better, invest in a jacket or pants that have reflective materials.

2. Plan your route

As you probably know, some intersections in Lawrenceburg and the surrounding area are more dangerous than others. Rather than walking on busy roadways, plan your route through sleepier areas of town.

3. Use the crosswalk

While motorists expect to see pedestrians in crosswalks, they usually do not anticipate encountering a walker in the middle of the road. Accordingly, rather than trying to dart across the street between cars, always use the crosswalk and wait for the walk signal to illuminate.

4. Make eye contact

Remember, if there is a tie between you and a car, truck or SUV, you lose. Therefore, before crossing the street, make eye contact with motorists. This is an effective way to ensure drivers see you.

You do not want to find yourself in the middle of an accident with an automobile. While you may be able to pursue compensation for the injuries you receive, you also may never feel like yourself again. By practicing safe walking techniques, you decrease your chances of colliding with a moving vehicle.
