Tennessee residents are likely thrilled that warmer weather has finally begun to creep across the south. After a winter that many felt would never end, people are excited to be out and about, enjoying the sunshine. Residents and visitors alike are preparing to take to the roads in search of adventure, and for many, summer vacation has officially begun. Unfortunately, as travel season heats up, there is an increased risk for serious truck accidents.
Each year, a group of motorcycle enthusiasts take to the roads to begin a pilgrimage across the nation, touring the highways of multiple states to reach their end destination of Washington, D.C. In late May, 2018, the convoy was making it's way up I-81 in Tennessee. One of the motorcycles somehow collided with an 18-wheeler truck and was subsequently caught underneath the large vehicle.
The entangled motorcycle was dragged underneath the enormous truck, which caused sparks to fly, resulting in a fire that soon engulfed the truck. The incident transpired so quickly that several other bikers were unable to avoid further collisions. The Tennessee highway patrol responded to the accident, which had become so severe they determined the road needed to be closed in the hours following. The crash remains under investigation, and while it has been confirmed that the truck driver was unharmed, several bikers suffered injuries as a result.
Truck accidents occurring on highways can be especially devastating due to the sheer size of the vehicles involved and the high rates of travel. While any accident can certainly result in injury or death, there is an increased likelihood for tragedy when one of the vehicles is far larger than the others involved. In the aftermath of serious truck accidents, it can be helpful to enlist the aid of an experienced attorney, who may be able to help victims and their families during the recovery process.
